What Causes Acid Reflux And Nausea?

Hi there,
I currently suffer from severe anxiety and I am so paranoid about my current conditions. I noticed my tongue was slightly yellow coated at the back and the rest of the tongue was pale and dry. Also my saliva is foamy...I should probably also mention I have been having some real problems with my stomach recently.. Lots of acid coming up into my throat and nausea? I do have an appertite still and I drink lots of water so I dont think its dehydration? Please help! Gemma

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Gemma,

Acid reflux is caused due to excess acid formation in stomach & relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Medical management of acid reflux consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, Omeprazole, etc. which prevent acid formation in stomach.

Additional management involves:
1. Intake of Domperidone preparations which strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
3. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.
Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & Upper GI endoscopy will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish you a good health.
Take care.
