What Causes Acid Reflux Along With Sore Throat And Black Stool?

Well my sister doesn t think I should be concerned but she s been having lots of heartburn, sore throat and now black tar looking stools for the past 4 days. Her heartburn has been going on now for over a month I feel it could be something very serious and she feels I m over reacting. Any suggestions. Oh I would also mention she takes priolsac for Gerd.

Thank You for the query at HCM

Black tarry stool require further evaluation, as it can be due to bleeding from stomach/lower esophagus due to the acid destruction of stomach/esophageal mucosa.
Stool occult blood testing and upper endoscopy are needed to make a definite diagnosis
Sore throat can also be due to acid reflux.
Here are few things to help relieve GERD symptoms
-continue prilosac
-Avoid fatty, fried , spicy food
-Avoid coffee, chocolate, alcohol
-Raise the head end of bed using wooden blocks under bed post
-Do not go to bed on full stomach. Give at least 2 hours between dinner and bed time.



Follow up with your Primary care Provider to undergo further management.
