What Causes Absence Seizure?

My grandson, age 11 was diagnosed tonight with Absence Seizure. What could have triggered this? he was with his parents and suddenly he started turning his head away and stared off into space and would not speak. He did finally say to his mom who are you ? but nothing else until the nurse at the hospital pricked his finger and he said OUCH but that was his only response. They are going to do an EEG and CT scan tomorrow.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Seizures may have many causes however about 50 per cent of seizures have no cause. Absence seizures are specifically known to be idiopathic that most of the times the cause is not found. A scan is usually done to rule out any intracranial problem like mass or else.

The EEG also would help to know if its absence seizures. The outlook is good. Most people are seizures free later in life even wouthout medicines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
