'Alcoholic Cirrhosis' is one of the major causes of the fatty liver and Hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver).

Other reasons may include:
Acute liver infection
Liver toxicity
Liver drug toxicity.
Viral hepatitis.

Alcohol leads to the damage of the hepatic normal texture through the toxic effects of the metabolites of the alcohol mainly Formaldehyde which is very toxic to the cells of the liver. It also damages the drainage system of the secretions of the liver--the bile.

All of it leads to liver tissue injury and it causes repetitive tissue injury-healing with formation of the scar tissue. This process repeats in chronic alcoholics forming strictures and fibrosis of the hepatic tissue. Also there is fatty changes that start in the parenchyma of the liver (inside the liver tissue).

All of this leads to the portal circulation damages and there is accumulation of the fluid inside the abdominal peritoneal cavity. That is the reason for swelling you have.

Specific testing is necessary to diagnose the extent of the injury to liver and to see the functions of the liver. That are the tests your physician has sent for.

Once you get the Lab reports, you may upload in a follow up query and I will get back to you in no time.
