What Causes Abdominal Pain On Intake Of High Acidic Foods?

I had an upper endoscopy several years ago and was told I have stomach polyps (benign). If I eat high vinegar foods (like salad dressings) I get a bad stomach ache. I have been taking Prilosec for years for the stomach aches (and most of the time the symptoms are controlled) and was wondering if the fact that my stomach acids are low might be causing the bad reactions to acids like vinegar. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Abdominal pain can occur when spicy food or high acidic food is consumed, especially in persons with ulcer or reflux symptoms. In the presence of gastric or duodenal ulcers, pain can occur when such irritant food comes in contact with ulcerated tissue. This can cause spasm of tissue in order to expel the irritant from the surface. Proton pump inhibitors such as Rabeprazole should be taken half an hour before food for about 2 weeks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
