What Causes Abdominal Pain And Stomach Upset After Taking Cephalexin?

I was prescribed 750 mg cephalexin twice a day for a severe cuticle bacterial infection. I think it may be upsetting my stomach. Does cephalexin cause stomach upset or mild stomach pain? Should I tough it out or ask my doc for an alternative antibiotic?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Suggestive of side effects of cephalexin. Stomach pain due to irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining, indigestions, and diarrhea are the most common side effects of cephalexin.

If stomach upset is mild, it may go away within a few days otherwise consult your doctor for a dose reduction of cephalexin or an alternate effective but a safer antibiotic to treat severe cuticle infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
