What Causes Abdominal Pain And Black Stool?

What causes and. Pain/spasms periodically in abdomen? I m taking xarelto for having had 3 PE. I have had anemia with a hgb of 8.8. I took iron tabs & got my hgb up to 12.8. Now I m no longer taking iron but I noticed black stools again. I continue to have pain. Upper GI & Barium enema are neg. Now what do I do?

Hello,

Presence of black stools brings the concern of bleeding in the gastrointerstinal system and should be investigated. Because you are on Xarelto the risk for bleeding is also increased.

You will need to have other examinations to try to find the origin of bleeding like stomach endoscopy (gastroesophageal endoscopy) and also colonoscopy. Xarelto does not generally need regular blood tests during its use but in cases of bleeding the doctor might consider having blood tests to check the concentration of Xarelto in blood and also check the PT (prothrombin time)
