What Causes Abdominal Cramps Along With Nausea?

I may have hypothyroidism. My doctor ordered an ultrasound and thyroid function check on my blood labs, awaiting the results on those for now. I ve been having abdominal cramps and nausea since Saturday. I vomited twice Monday night and once last night. Is this related to the hypothyroidism?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

No, that is not likely related to the thyroid disease. Low levels of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) do not typically cause these symptoms. These are more likely due to an infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

The infection may be viral or bacterial and generally lasts a few days only in most persons. Treatment would involve replacing the fluids you are losing but in small amounts initially (1 tablespoon every 5 mins for the 1st hour).

The amount would be increased if this is tolerated. No solid foods should be used till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms. Probiotics may help as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
