What Causes A Swollen Lymph Node Under The Jaw Bone On The Left Side?

Have a swollen lymph node under my left jaw bone. No fever. Just had a check up and blood work, other than high platelets and sugar at 101 no other issues and no fever. Its been swollen for 5 weeks now and varies in size. Its a bit painful at times.. i have no infections that I can tell.

Hi..
Thanks for writing to us.

You have inflammation of the sub-mandibular lymph nodes and it is commonly observed when there is infection in your teeth, throat face etc..

Many a times there is no active infection but sub-clinical infection with bacteria present in blood can infection the regional lymph nodes leading to their swelling and pain..

As you said that it is a bit painful at times then it looks like it is most probably due to infection only..

So it is advisable to take a short course of antibiotics like Amoxicillin or Clindamycin and along with it anti-inflammatory pain relieving medicines like Ibuprofen or Aleve.
Do cool compresses over the lymph nodes 2-3 times a day.
You can soak a cotton cloth in cold water and place gently over the node till the cloth absorb heat.
Do it 2-3 times a day and atleast 6-8 repetitions each time.

Hopefully you will get better in 3-4 days, but if you do not find improvement in a week then a biopsy of the node should be done..

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards.
