What Causes A Sound From My Throat While Sleeping?

I make this horrible noise every time I am on the verge of falling asleep. It is so bad that it prevents me from falling asleep for hours at a time. I have no idea where it is coming from (it s not snoring) but it appears to be coming from somewhere inside my neck. When lying on my side the noise is loudest in the ear against the pillow. This problem has been going on now for five years. I do not have any problems with breathing. Only this irritating noise which keeps me awake.

Rule out if there is any anatomical or physiological problem. The noise is just prior going to sleep, so must be related to post dinner changes, diaphragm problems, or any other anatomical problem in neck.
