What Causes A Soft Spot On The Skull Above The Ear Post Injury From A Fall?

I just discovered a soft spongy spot on the side of my 1yr olds head above his right ear. It is larger than a golf ball I would say. He fell off of a chair probably 4 days ago, but he has seemed fine. I have never felt a soft spot like this. The spot is not popping out like a goose egg you can t see it, only feel it. Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, most possible cause of palpable lump below skin area after an injury of golf ball, is hematoma formation. One should not neglect a condition like this as it may later be infection provoking other problems at systemic level. Following measures will help you by the time you consult your primary care provider:
- Local application of ice 3 times a day
- Prescription of antibiotics as penicillin or others proteolytic enzymes as serratiopeptidase

Regular periodic evaluation of the lump by consultant for regression is very vital and key step to prevention of secondary bacterial infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
