I have a sore outer side of my foot. It is usually the worst when I lay down for a long period. The vein in my foot swells and the outside of the foot become extremely sore. This has happened three other times in the last four years. Usually goes away after two to three days.

This is a chronic foot ulcer. They are quite common. Diabetes can contribute to it. It is mainly from bad veins in the foot causing swelling. This disturbs both the skin and the ability to bring new blood in. They area doesn't get good circulation and the skin breaks down and has a hard time healing.
