What Causes A Rash On The Body While On Methimazole And Atenolol?

Hi there I am being treated for Graves disease with methimazole and atenolol. Today s blood count shows no eosinophils. I have a rash which was thought to be due to the high dose of methimazole, but now I am nervous that I am having other reactions to the meds. Should I be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Methimazole can cause the rash as a side effect and changes in the blood count. The most important change in blood count is neutrophil number decrease (granulocytes) which makes patients more sensitive to infections.

When these side effects happen the doctor might need to alter the dose of Methimazole (reduce it a little) and check the blood count again. If changes in blood count and rash persist then your doctor will have to have another plan for the treatment of the Graves' disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
