What Causes A Painful Lump On The Side Of The Calf Muscle?

Dear Dr. Herrick, I am 72 yr. female in good health. I saw a nurse practitioner yesterday who told me the painful lump on the left side of my calf was not a blood clot- (as I had feared). She scheduled a venus dopplar (sp) for Monday...just to be 100% sure. {My husband has stage 4 renal cancer- we ve been side by side for 50 yrs.......... My latest thinking is.........could this tumor looking tender lump be a soft tissue sarcoma?} And, would a sonogram be able show up any warning if it is cancerous? Also, should I have confidence in a Gen. Practitioner and/ or a nurse practitioner to be evaluating my lump ? I m very concerned. People around here need me :-) Oh yes- I am 5 5 180 Lbs. Have always been healthy- I am only taking bloodpressure and cholesterol med.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi
Welcome to healthcaremagic
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Your nurse is probably right that it is not blood clot. It is unlikely to be soft tissue sarcoma to be diagnosed by sonography. It is likely to be diagnosed by MRI to some extent and by excisional biopsy 100 percent. You can discuss with your doctor about it. Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then don't hesitate to write to us. I will be happy to help you.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
