What Causes A Painful Lump On The Neck Below The Ear?

I have visible lump in the front/side my neck right below my ear and it is painful to the touch, but I have not had any cold or flu like symptoms. I do not have problems swallowing and my throat is not sore. Could this be some kind of infection and should I wait it out for weeks. I noticed the lump and pain 4 days ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

It seems to be cystic acne or boil or carbuncle or lymphedenitis near the neck below neckrather than just painful lump as per your description.

However,it must be confirmed by clinical inspection of the lump or swelling by some local doctor or dermatologist.

Here,we could also say it as’cystic acne' because cystic acne is also a type of boil that is formed when oil ducts become clogged and infected.

Boils occurs commonly due to bacterial infection (mostly staphylococcus aureus) in a person with poor nutrition or poor hygiene or might be problems with the immune system or diabetes..

Tab.Phexin 500mg (1st generation Cephalosporin) is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic and it is very well effective to cure cystic acne.

You can also be given other broad spectrum antibiotics like 2nd and 3rd cephalosporin or fluroquinolones (levofloxacin or ofloxacin) as per your doctor's advice.

Small boils could be treated with proper gram-positive antibiotic coverage for 3 to 5 days small course. Longer course of antibiotics must be avoided as it will lose the effectiveness of the drug or might develop resistance to the bacteria.

It would be advisable that you consult dermatologist for complete medical history and proper diagnosis of the underlying cause lump.
