What Causes A Hard Lump On The Knee Of A 4 Year Old?

My son is 4 years old weighs 32lbs and is healthy as far as we know. I was giving him a bath tonight and noticed a hard lump behin his right knee just about the size of a golf ball. He recently has been complaning his leg hurts to walk. I am scared that this could be something serious!
