What Causes A Child To Constantly Put His Fingers In The Mouth?

My 3.5 year old son is often placing his hands/fingers in his mouth throughout the day on and off. Only started a couple of months ago His preschool teacher has commented he does it at any given time, while sitting with friends, playing in the yard... he also does it at home and it s driving me crazy- I ve talked to him about germs and he is too big for this behaviour but nothing helps. I m worried is it a sensory thing and a big sign of immaturity?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the fingers putting in the mouth do not necessarily indicate severe underlying immaturity or other CNS disorder with an only sole presence of the same.

* A thorough evaluation of a child with neurology aspect in terms of sensory and motor reflexes is mandatory to get a particular conclusion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
