What Causes A Bald Patch On The Scalp?

I noticed a bald spot on the right side of my head when I was combing my hair. I don t think it was there about 8 weeks ago, but I can t be sure about this. No redness or scabs on scalp; just lack of hair. Spot is oval, about 2 inches across. I m not aware of any history of baldness in my family. Thanks, JG

Hello,

Sudden appearance of a bald spot or area on your head is indicative of Alopecia areata. This commonly occurs due to autoimmune reaction. You are suggested to get it clinically examined by a dermatologist. The dermatologist by tell you to get skin biopsy done to confirm diagnosis.

There is no cure for alopecia areata. However, hair regrowth can be possible by the application of cortisone cream, topical minoxidil, phototherapy or a course of corticosteroids are quite effective.
