What Causes HDL Level To Drop?

I am a 58 year old healthy woman. My HDL has been in the high 50's for years. The last time it was checked was 10 months ago. Today it is 35. What caused this huge drop and how serious is it. My doctor has told me to take huge amounts of non-flushing niacin.

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hello,
I understand your concern.
I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious diseases specialist, answering your query.

HDL is the protective lipoprotein present in the body.

Its high value is protective, as your value is gone down it is quite risky.

Niacin is protective for high lipid level, so taking niacin is helpful for low HDL.

As your HDL gone down there must be simultaneous rise in LDL and VLDL. This both lipo protein is dangeours.

I advice you should investigate the case. Start doing exercise. Also stop taking high fat diet. Increase high protein diet.

I will be happy to answer your further concern, you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun.
Thank you.
