What Causes Clostridium Difficile Infection?

I was just in the hospital for shredded looking bm s and diarrhea. They said I has c diff and we re treating it with Flagyll. Also other g.i. Issues. I didn t get the irregular b.m. s resolved to my satisfaction. I will be following up with a GI specialist. Any ideas what could be causing these weird bm s?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Clostridium difficile is an infection of the bowel caused where the C. Difficile bug causes inflammatiion and irritation of the inner lining of the bowel. This causes the bowel to not work properly leading to diarrhea, pain and sometimes even bleeding.
This infection is usually caused by certain antibiotics such as Clyndamicin, Cipro, Levaquin etc.
It is treated with Flagyl and sometimes repeated treatment is necessary until complete erradication.

I hope this answers your question.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
