What Causes Chiari Malformation?

I want to know if Chiari Type I could be caused by a closed TBI. I have central pain syndrome, strabismus, and total absence of gag reflex associated with the closed TBI which was caused by explosion in combat (2004). The TBI occurred simultaneously with a neck strain. Recent MRI shows cerebellar tonsils low lying approx 3 - 4 mm.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Head trauma can cause Chiari malformation even though most common cause being congenital. Consult a neurosurgeon and plan further management.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
