What Cause Recurrent Ear Infections In The Same Ear?

What would cause repeated ear infections in the same ear? My son has experienced two infections in same ear within last couple months. Now he is experiencing pain again and I think he may have a third infection. I am taking him in to urgent care later today. He is not a swimmer and so I do not believe it is swimmer s ear. What are your thoughts? Thanks! : )))
