My son was just diagnosed with segmental NF. He is 12 years old. He soes not have any other symptoms except the cafe au lait spots on the right half of his stomach and back and the freckling in his right arm. What specifically do we have to watch out for with this illness????

Hi You are most probably talking about neurofibromatosis type 1. Main manifestation are cafe au lait spots, axillary and inguinal freckling, neurofibromas, lisch nodules on iris, optic glioma. Most common complicatons are cancer development, learning disablity, seizures, hypertension. Regular clinical assessment of patient at least yearly. These include opthalmologic exam,neurologic assessment, blood pressure monitoring and scoliosis evaluation. Take care
