What Are The Withdrawal Symptoms Of Citalopram?

Is there any known symptoms from weening off of celexa? Ive been on 20 mg. And saw a psychiatrist who advised me to take 10 mg everyday for 1 month and then stop it all together after 1 month. would you agree? I m more hungry but it could not be related. Just curious what are the common causes if this can be generalized

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is an antianxiety drug used in anxiety disorder, panic disorder and mixed anxiety depression syndrome.

It should not be stopped suddenly otherwise the anxiety symptoms return and usually with more intensity than before. It is gradually tapered down and titrated.

This does not cause chemical imbalance in the brain. What I usually do with my patients is that I make it 15 mgm for 1 month (after an initial dose of 20 mg), then 10 mgm for next month and then 5 mgm for next 1 month. If the symptoms improve and patient has no subjective complaints,I stop it altogether.

I always couple it with relaxation techniques, meditation ,belly breathing and behavioral therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
