What Are The Symptoms Of Hernia?

I am a 71 year old female. About a week ago I bent over and pulled or popped something on my left side where my hip has been replaced twice. that day I could barely walk even with 2 canes. i went to my ortho dr and he couldn t see anything on x-rays. It s some better if I bend slightly to walk. Could this be a hernia?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for contacting HCM.

As your orthopedic doctor has confirmed that swelling is not related with hip replacement, hernia could be the possible reason.

Let me tell you few signs and symptoms. Please co-related it with your condition.
Hernia swelling will bulge out on coughing.
The swelling extends from lateral hip bone notch and extends towards groin.
Initially it can be reduced manually.
There might be gastrointestinal symptoms like indigestion, diarrhoea.

If some / all sign & symptoms are there you should consult surgeon and confirm about hernia. Final treatment is surgical reduction and mesh plasty.

Regards
Dr. Hiren
