Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is the "rocking of the head forward and backward" a symptom of PD. My wife (age 75) does this a number of times a day and usually says that she is not aware of doing it. I notice it almost exclusively when she is watching tv. The rocking may last only 10 to 15 seconds or as long as about 3 minutes. Her hands sometime shake - not necessarily at the same time of the head rocking. Also, she constantly drops items from her hands, usually 10 to 20 times per day. What do you think? Thank you very much. Keith E. Jones, Jr.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, head nodding is one of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and moreover dropping of objects may also be because of rigidity which is also a symptom of Parkinson’s. Especially tremors are resting tremors in Parkinson’s so tremors while watching TV is also consistent with Parkinson’s.
Hence I suggest u to get a neurologist consultation once if these symptoms are very devastating and needs treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
