Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Remeron was prescribed to a friend who has had two strokes - one somewhat major affecting his whole right side, the second one a year later affected his arms, hands and right leg - a slightly lighter stroke. He recovered from both of them but I am concerned that the side effects of remeron may contribute to another heart problem or stroke. What do you think? He is now 61 years of age, has had an auto accident which collapsed one lung and weighs only 117 pounds, 6 feet tall.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Remeron is Mirtazapine and the drug is an anti depressant and anti anxiety drug. The drug is a safe drug and is free of serious side effects. The drug is known to cause sedation, weight gain and in high doses may contribute to lipid abnormalities. So though the drug can be given in case of heart problems still there are other safer options available. Drugs like Sertraline which is a SSRI drug can be used. The drug can be used safely in cases of heart illnesses and is also very effective. If the heart problems and stroke are main issues then he can consult his doctor and can discuss about these drugs.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
