What Are The Side Effects Of Overuse Of Laxatives?
Do you know if there are any doctors who can treat a person who may have a dependence to laxatives? I have had trouble in the past being able to go, never really could get long term help for this. So in desperation I would try over the counter products which worked and the problem resolved (maybe for a while). Now I am getting much worse and prescribed medicines do not offer a great solution. I don t think I should abuse over the counter medications because I m not sure how safe they are. I just want to find a doctor who can help me with this condition. Can you recommend anyone? Dallas, TX
Based on the history you have shared, laxatives can be motility agents, stool softeners or lubricants for smooth stool passage. Lactulose, castor oil etc are usually used as softeners and have less side effects. The drugs which increase gastric motility, or stool passage by acting on autonomic nervous system have side effects and dependence issues. Glycerine suppositories etc for smooth passage also have no side effects. Drinking water and good hydration with fibre like ispaghola husk etc., also are safe interventions.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
