What Are The Side Effects Of Hiatal Hernia Surgery?

My mom is a 73 yr old, the dr said she has a hiatal hernia. He says she may need surgery, how do we know for sure if there is a real need for surgery. What are pros and cons of this kind of surgery ay this age? What are the pros and cons of having the surgery. What happens if she doesn t have the surgery? Thank you very much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
In hiatal hernia there are 2 types.among them paraoesophageal hernia is the one in which there is risk of strangulation that means cut off of blood supply to the stomach resulting in medical emergency.Even though she is 73,otherwise healthy i mean no diabetes and hypertension no need to worry for surgery as there are laparoscopic techniques and complete recovery in 2-3 weeks is possible but she should not lift heavy weights for 3 months. later she should take precautions that this will not reoccur by maintaining diet and exercise and body weight should be maintained.her health should be maintained because chronic cough, straining during defaecation, obesity are some of the factors resulting in this condition.to coment on the real need for surgery dr has to see all the reports and examine patient physically.
If she does not go for surgery she may have chances of developing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or are unable to have a bowel movement or pass gas, which are due to a strangulated hernia or an obstruction, which are medical emergencies, then she should be taken to ER.
