Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Last night I was having very severe pains coming from my abdomen, I m pretty sure it s my uterus more specifically. It was like waves of pain that started suddenly and went on for about an hour until I took a painkiller and went to sleep. Only breathing like a woman in labor calmed me down until I took the painkiller. I am still very sore and it hurts to move too much. I ve been on birth control for about a year and am 5 days into the first week on the white pills in my pack. I don t get a period anymore (even when I m on the brown pills) which I think is a side effect, and I m 99% sure I m not pregnant. What could be the cause of this pain?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hello,
Yes, irregular/delayed periods and pain in abdomen are well known side effects of contraceptives. This is mostly due to: • Digestive disturbances caused by altering motility of GI tract (due to hormones inbuilt in oral contraceptive leading to stomach cramp, nausea, bloating, and constipation). • It also can be premenstrual pain.
If you are regular in taking pills you cannot be pregnant as you think it is. Such pain can be managed by pain killer/sleeping on stomach/hot water fomentation. Digestive problem can be managed by multiple small servings of food spread over a day with sufficient fibers and water intake, and regular exercises.
Any other cause of pain including bladder infection (urine burning and frequency) or any acute pain with tenderness at the spot, vomiting, and fever needs consultation of a doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
