What Are The Side Effects Of Zofran?

Zofran was recently prescribed for my father, 83, for symptoms vertigo. He is on a number of heart medications and has an artificial valve with a history of irregular heartbeats. He was also prescibed a vertigo medication. I was just reviewing Zofran for side effects etc. and wondering if this appropriate for him to continue. Has been taking approximately 1 week.

Hello,

Zofran (Ondansetron) is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist prescribed for the treatment of nausea and vomiting including due to cancer chemotherapy and following surgery.

It is not effective in the treatment of vertigo. Generally, it's well tolerated however, it may cause headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, or constipation.

Since your father has irregular heart beats, it may interact with the anti-arrhythmic (heart rhythm medicines) enhancing their side effects.
