What Are The Side Effects Of Strattera?

My son is currently taking Concerta 36 mg. This is the maximum dose for his weight. He is 9 and a half years old and 47 pounds. We were thinking of switching based on a psychological assessment, as well as because he has no appetite at school. He has also developed some nervous tics, like pulling at his lip or hair etc. The Concerta has helped him somewhat in school, but maybe not enough. The Strattera prescribed to him is the minimum dose of 18mg. Are there any benefits of Strattera over Concerta, and also, what are the initial side effects of taking Strattera (if any). Do we need to taper off the Concerta first?

Hi,

Both the drugs that you have mentioned belong to a different classes. Strattera is a selective Norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor (SNRI) whereas Concerta is a central nervous system stimulant. Straterra can cause small changes in hyperactivity and impulse control within two weeks, but it may take 4 to 8 weeks for full action. This drug can cause side effects like dry mouth, nausea, headache, abdominal pain, skin rash or itching. Concerta should definitely be tapered over a week period before switching to other drugs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
