General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.

Used basically as an urinary antiseptic to treat uncomplicated lower UTI or
prophylaxis of UTI when catheterization or instrumentation of lower urinary tract is performed.

Generally it is well tolerated.
However it can cause dark brown discoloration of urine, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort, neuropathies and hemolytic anemia (especially in patients with G6PD deficiency).
Its long term use may result in fibrosis in the lungs.
