Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has had an upper respiratory thing that has been going on for a week. He went to the doctor and they prescribed a steroid medication. He took it until it was gone and it didn t help. We have some clindamycin leftover in our cupboard and it is still good (not expired). Not sure if his upper respiratory problem is bacterial, but thought it might help. He took 3 pills last night and woke up today with a terribly runny nose. Does that mean that the antibiotic is making it worse and he should stop taking it, or is that what happens when it is working and breaking up infection?
Hi! I really appreciate your concern towards your husband's illness. Nothing to worry about it. He is suffering from inflammation of the nose due to viral infection. Since he has no fever, cough with phlegm, or chest pain there is no need for the antibiotic as antibiotics are not effective in viral infections. Let him take Cetrizine tablets two times daily, if he has severe running nose he can use nasal decongestant drops that will relieve him off the terribly running nose. Clindamycin is known to cause diarrahea, abdominal cramps, etc. due to overgrowth of bacterial gut flora in the large intestine.
