What Are The Side Effects Of Alprazolam?

HI, I am a 69 year old female in good health and I have been prescribed alprazolam for twenty years. I live in Texas and each month it is a like passing legislation to get a re-fill. What I have feared has happened as of today and this is after I visited my new doctor twice within two weeks. She has decided due to strict laws here ( that I just learned of) not to write for this drug and has set up an appt with a psychatrist so I can get my prescription. At any rate, She also added she would give me the number of tablets needed up to the time I see the Psychastrist. My script was up today. I am out of my drug and she did not call in a new script for those pills. I was told that my appt will be the 16th of this month...next Monday and I will hear from the Psych office for directions and time. I went to Walgreens to get my script and no script. I went home and called my doctor s office and they leave early on Thursday. I am out. I am expected to go cold turkey on 4 pills a day I have taken for 20 years. I have done everything that I can think of to not let this happen and it has. What do I do? I take 0.025mg 4X daily. I need help...thank you!

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Alprazolam is a benzodiazepinecompound, which affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety.
Hence, it is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression.
Commonly reported side effects of alprazolam include fatigue, sedation, memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, drowsiness, tremor, ataxia, depression, headache, menstrual disturbance, constipation, weight gain, nervousness, skin rash, difficulty in micturition, dysarthria, diarrhea, blurred vision, insomnia, anxiety, irritability, decreased libido and decreased appetite.
Long term use of it might land up in dependency of the drug. Also, some of the side effects are dose related too. And not everyone will experience all the above side effects mentioned.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
