What Are The Foods To Avoid When Diagnosed With Diverticulitis?

My mother has diverticulitis. I need the most recent and comprehensive list or chart of foods to avoid. Siblings keep telling me feed mother nothing with seeds (tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, squash…), peel all fruit, pinto beans must be mashed up. All this contradicts some of the things I find on the web. Very confusing; can you help?

Hi,

Eating a high-fiber diet may help prevent diverticular disease, and should improve your symptoms.

Your diet should be balanced and include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, plus whole grains.

Adults should aim to eat 18g (0.6oz) to 30g (1.05oz) of fiber a day, Fiber-rich foods include:

beans, such as navy beans and kidney beans. Whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and bulgur, fruits, vegetables and vegetable juices, potatoes, hot cereals, such as oatmeal and amaranth.

-Fruits and vegetables should be a significant part of any diet to help in recovering from diverticular disease.

They are full of essential nutrients and are easy to digest. When on recovery diet follow a high carbohydrate diet, Fat contents of diet should be very low.

However, Olive oil, canola oil, and flaxseed oil are all healthy fats that are recommended as part of a diet for patients.
-Healthy proteins in the form of low-fat milk and dairy products along with lean meats, beans, eggs and soy products can also be a part of a healthy diet.
-Seeds and nuts can be taken but in a limited amount, as they are difficult to digest.

Now let's move on to Foods to Avoid

-Processed food items
-Hydrogenated oils
-Avoid alcohol and smoking.
