What Are The Final Stages Of Liver Cirrhosis?

Good afternoon, I have a question regarding my father who is in stage for cirrhosis. He has been in stage 4 for several years now. He is going to be 69 on April 30. He is several symptoms happening that are described as the last day. His sleep cycle has been off for the about the last 2 weeks. He is sleeping all day and cant sleep at night. There is also some changes in his behavior the last week. Not anything aggressive just changes that are notable by my mother who has lived with him for 46 years and know when something is off. He has had a loss of appetite for about a week now. He is on 11 medications a day. His last ultrasound on his liver was over 6 months ago. He goes to the va so they failed to make the appointment when they were supposed to and scheduled it for October. Can you tell me what you know of the last stage. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to help my mom and myself prepare for what we know is unavoidable for all of us yet still very hard to face at this particular moment. Thank you for your time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This is a serious disease if cirrhosis is present and quitting alcohol is the most important thing that should be done. Also, medications which are hematotoxic should be avoided.

This is necessary to prevent disease progression which is lethal in most cases. At early stages, it can be treated with these measures but in case of progression.

Diet should be balanced and healthy and get regular exercise. Limit high-carb foods such as bread, grits, rice, potatoes, and corn.

And cut down on drinks with lots of sugar like sports drinks and juice. If there is viral hepatitis as the underlying cause then antiviral medications are required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
