Hi,

If the heart contracts poorly (which is the case of your boyfriend) it can develop bad arrhithmias which can be life threatening. Cardioverter defibrilators are indicated for treating those bad arrhythmias. If heart works normally they don't do anything. Whenever patient has arrhythmia , defibrilator intervenes and ceases the arrhythmia. Patient feels it as a little chock.

Hope I could help you.

In case of further questions don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,
