What Are The Drug Interactions Between Sulfasalazine And Ibuprofen?
what are the drug interactions between sulfersalazine and ibprofen. I take the sulfer for joint pain and prevention of damage but am really hurting and ibprofen is the only med that subdues the pain. Can I go ahead and take the ibprofen without too much consequence? I have gotten off t he sulfer at times just so I can take the ibprofen
Sulphasalazine is given for long term joint protective effect and has to be taken for prolonged duration for benefit. On the other hand NSAIDS like ibuprofen gives short term pain relief and cause side effects on prolonged treatment like acid peptic disease, and renal problems.
You can take ibuprofen for short duration. Take it on prescription. Take it after food or with antacid. Go for other means of pain relief like intraarticular steroid injections, tramadol, piroxicam. If it fails to help you, please do not stop sulphasalazine on your own. You can also apply analgesic gel like volini, and capsaicin for short term relief without any systemic side effect.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Manisha Roy
