What Are The Chances Of False Positive Result For Hydrocodone In A Hair Test?

I have an client that we had done a hair test on... the test came back as: Positive: Opiates -codeine -hydrocodone after submitting the prescriptions to the MRO they still say he is on hydrocodone... is it possible to have a false positive given that this persone takes Codeine often for a knee injury?

Hello there,
The hair test that is done detects traces of metabolites that are common to codeine or hydrocodone as the test does not differentiate the source of metabolites but the metabolites themselves. So the possibility for a false positive does exist. To get a confirmatory test on the source (whether its over the counter drugs or actual opiates) tandem testing also called tandem MS testing is a solution. It is slightly more expensive but eliminates false positives. Hope this helps,
