What Are Severe Pain In The Hip With Bulged, Tender Veins In The Leg Suggestive Of?

Husband had severe, sudden hip pain several weeks ago. ER diagnosed as bursitis and shot with cortisone. Not much relief so after two weeks went to primary. Ultrasound ruled out blood clot. Pain in leg, new bulging veins (he does have varicose veins), tender to touch continue. Overweight as well. Tried ice, heat and anti inflammatories, none being very effective. Any suggestions for next steps?
