Weakness, Loss Of Weight, Dry Mouth, Loss Of Appetite. Stopped Drinking Alcohol. Withdrawal Symptoms?

Hi, my husband has been drinking for years and just recently stopped about 2mths ago, now he is experiencing very uncomfortable symptoms like, weakness, loss of weight, dry mouth, and some loss of appitiet. Not sure if this is part of alcohol withdrawl or what. I'm making an appointment with his doctor, but just want to know what's going on.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The symptoms are apparently due to complications of prolonged alcohol consumption, such as, chronic alcoholic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach); alcohol-induced liver damage (called Alcoholic Liver Disease); deficiency of specific Vitamin Bs, such as Thiamine, B12, Folic acid; or damage to the Pancreas.

If I were his treating doctor, I would have -pending his appointment with GI doctor- advised high protein diet, anti-acid agents, such as Omeprazole, Thiamine in high doses along with B12 +Folic acid.

His doctor will carry out tests to evaluate the damage to stomach lining, liver function and- based on the tests' reports- will prescribe appropriate treatment.

Hope you find my response helpful, informative and enlightening.
