Hi Dr. Grief, was recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and I know the cutoff level is 3.5 and mine was a 9 so my doctore is referring me to an Endocrinogolist however I haven t heard back from them and I have called everyday and left messages. I know I need a referall which is why they are handling it but wonder is this a true Emergency other than that fact that I am having severe symptoms. I also wondering if nausea and vommiting are symptons as well. Any advice you can product on this or if I need to just go to the ER please let me know and Thank You so much for your response and time. Lisa Piechocki
hi i am dr.rlv phani kumar,i would be glad to answer your question regarding hypothyroidism,as per your tsh level it seems to be sub-clinical hypothyroidism ,features of hypothyroidism become visible or prominent once tsh crosses 10,and hypothyroidism with tsh 9 isnt any emergency and your complaints of nausea and vomitings doesnt seem to be linked to it,can you mention is there any swelling in your both lower limbs?facial puffiness, any complaints of breathlessness or uneasiness,i dont think these symptoms must be present with tsh 9 m IU/ml.hypothyroidism is the most simplest to treat ,its done by supplementing with levothyroxine tabs 50-75 micrograms daily once before breakfast and repeating tsh level after two-three months depending on the clinical status and maintaining tsh level less than 3.5 according to your lab standard value, and icreaing tsh values suggest your thyroid gland is not producing enough throid hormone and tsh (thyroid stimulationg hormone)is compensating by raising its levels to make thyoid gland meet the requirements,so we usually go with the tsh values for adjusting the dose required for the particular patient,in your case i suggest anti tpo antibody test also to be done to establish the cause of hypothyroidism, and i assure you not to worry as hypothyroidism is very easy to manage if the patient regularly takes the medicine,i think i have answered your qustion any more queries feel free to reply i shall revert back . thank you. dr.rlv phanikumar.
