HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Chronic cough is a cough that lasts for at least 8 weeks.

The most common causes for chronic cough are : (1) upper airway syndrome- this is basically related to post nasal drip of secretions, 20% of persons with this condition may not realise that they have these secretions. This is the most common reason for chronic cough

(2) GERD- gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause chronic cough as well

(3) asthma

Because upper airway syndrome is the most common reason ( in 80% of persons), then initial treatment is aimed at this condition.
This would involve avoiding any known allergen or stimulant.

It would also include the use of anti histamines and oral decongestants. Topical nasal sprays may also be helpful.

I hope this helps

General & Family Physician Dr. Polash Sannigrahi's  Response
Hello dear,

Presence of cough with itching in throat & thick sputum can be due to irritation of the respiratory tract due to hyper responsiveness to any allergen.
The sputum being white and clear rules out any infective cause.

Under such circumstances, management usually involves:
1. Steam inhalation for providing soothing effect & reduce the irritation in the respiratory tract.
2. Antihistamine preparations like Allegra can be taken for symptomatic relief.
3. Montelukast, which is used as a maintenance therapy to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies & asthma.
4. Maintain adequate hydration & take a healthy balance diet.
5. Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.
