Swollen Left Foot, Difficulty In Walking. X Ray Showed Broken Metatarsal. Is This Due To Running On Treadmill?

My left foot is very swollen, had it x rayed as thought may have broken metatarsal but x ray showed no break. Two weeks later painful to walk on and swollen below toes No bruising. Could x rays have missed stress fracture or could it be something else? Think i did it on holiday by running on treadmill maybe?!

Thank you

Hi
Thank you for your question to HCM.

The metatarsal fracture could certainly be related to running on the treadmill. Running is in fact the commonest cause of metatarsal stress fractures.

Stress fractures are very commonly missed on Xrays as most of the times they are not visible unless it is an old fracture shows 'signs of healing' on Xray. If there is high suspicion bone scan or CT of the foot may be ordered for timely diagnosis. Some surgeons choose to treat it as a stress fracture based on symptoms and clinical findings in runners.

Hope this is helpful. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
