Swollen Knuckle With No Pain. No Injury. What Is It?

I am 51 years old and female. I woke up two days ago with swollen\red skin on the first knuckle of my forefinger. It is clearly not the joint , as when I gently pull the skin away from the joint, the underneath area does not seem to be affected. I see no apparent center spot (such as a bite or splinter entry, etc.). I can t say it hurts but it is a little sensitive and looks so odd when my hand is held flat, as one of the wrinkles on the joint looks like it has a little mountain on it. When I make a fist, there is no bump, but the area is just deep red. I have no injury I can think of and haven t been doing anything unusual with my hands. Any thoughts? Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

It's probably osteoarthritis...the wear and tear arthritis. When it happens slowly, it may not hurt.

I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed clinical examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance to reach the diagnosis and treatment plan according to that.

Wishing you good health
Regards.
