Swollen Arm, Bruising, Pinching Feeling In Elbow. Had Fallen On Concrete. Should I Meet A Doctor?

Hi I fell on a skateboard onto concrete. I landed with my arm between me and the concrete. It's swollen and bruising is starting to come out about a week later. Today I fell on it again in the same fashion and now there is a burning/pinching feeling just about my elbow. It is also sore to the touch. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and it makes me cringe when touched. Thoughts? Should I go to the Dr and get it checked out?

Hi,
You have closed injury. Because of that swelling happened after week. Although you have high pain tolerance. It is wise to do x-ray examination to check for hairline fracture in bone. Also look for any functional restriction in movement of your arm.

I think at least you have to visit to doctor, do a x-ray examination and meantime you can take pain-killer. you can also take hot water shake to relieve swelling.

Good luck. Get well soon.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

If you are able to ACTIVELY flex and extend the elbow, then a fracture is unlikely.

All your symptoms in the description might be related to SOFT TISSUE CONTUSION. This should generally resolve within few days by the following measures -

* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications

If there is no symptom relief , consult an orthosurgeon and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Kerry Pottinger's  Response
Hi,
There is a possibility that you may have damaged ligaments or even caused a small fracture. I would suggest you should visit your doctor. An X-ray may help exclude a serious injury. In the meantime you could consider paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain. Rest your arm in a sling if possible. Cold compresses may also help.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
It might be soft tissue injury or fracture.Without ray it is difficult to differentiate fracture from others. I suggest you consult an orthopaedician for clinical examination. You may get Xray under his/her supervision.
Meanwhile avoid putting weight and rest well. You can take ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.
Hope this will helps you. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.
Regards.
