Suggest Ways To Wean Off Meloxicam

I ve been taking meloxicam 7.5 ,g for 1.5 years for cervical osteoarthritis. Great relief but would like to wean myself off it to avoid possible side effects. Problem is whenever I try to wean myself I m stiff within 2-3 days. Is it better to wean gradually, i.e. every other day for a while and then every 2 days, etc? The only other medical issue I have is Barrett s esophagus, no dysplasia, for which I take Dexilant daily.

Hi,
Meloxixam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAID) drug used to relieve symptomatic pain and inflammation. You need to address the inflammation in your cervical region and then try to taper the dose.
Meloxicam does not produce any psychological dependence and very less physical dependence. The dependence in your case is because of the inflammation control by meloxicam. The inflammation returns as you stop the drug and the symptoms exaggerate.
I would recommend physiotherapy and usage of cervical collar if required so that you are addressing the inflammation. Consult your orthopedicain before you try to alter the dose or stopping the drug. Tapering the dose might not help much as long as you are not addressing the underlying inflammation.
I hope the above information helps you. Thank you for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a nice day.
