Suggest Ways To Stop Bleeding From The Ankles

I was shaving my leg and did not even notice that I had cut my leg near my ankle. The blood spewed and I could not get it to stop. If this was to happen what is the best course of action to take to get it to stop bleeding. It was very scary. Lillian Tuten

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Don't be panic. Any cut with bleeding can be stopped by:
1. Applying direct pressure on the cut with clean hands or after using gloves minimum for 10 minutes
2. Clean the wound with soap and warm water
3. Apply ice to stop bleeding and to form clot in the cut area
4. Apply antiseptic like Betadine and cover it with sterile gauze until it forms a scab which usually takes several days

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
