Suggest Ways To Keep Air Passage Open Without A Throat Tracheal

My father-in-law has squarmous cell carcinoma in his upper chest area. The mass is in stage 1, however its blocking his breathing canal. He is presently being weened from the vent, breathing at 8 on the removal trails, and will move down to 5 tomorrow. The doctors are asking the family about using a throat tracheal. My question is: Are there any other methods to making sure is air passage stays open besides a trach; if not is there any possibility of other treatments that can be used since we have used 10 days of radiation with the treacheal in .
